She wears a pink dress and is often getting rescued by Mario, but surely there are plenty more things to know about Princess Peach?
Whether you’re wondering how she came about or you’re simply a fan of the games wanting to learn more, you’ve come to the right place.
Here are 10 fun facts about Princess Peach.
Her original appearance was changed later on.
Princess Peach was originally designed by Miyamoto, a video game designer who joined Nintendo in 1977.
However, he wasn’t happy with the way she turned out, and as a result, he asked Yōichi Kotabe to create a new design.
Kotabe, born in 1936, worked as a designer for Nintendo from 1985 until 2007.
He was given specific designs about Princess Peach, and was instructed to draw her as ‘stubborn, but cute’.
Princess Peach could be the cousin of Princess Daisy.
Princess Peach and Princess Daisy are very good friends, but some people think their relationship could actually be a little more than that.
The Prima Guide for Mario Kart Wii included a quote which described Daisy and Peach as cousins.
However, this has never been confirmed and there is no additional proof.
She didn’t move until 1988.
Up until 1988, designers believed it was too complicated to make Peach into a movable character.
With the introduction of Super Mario Bros 2 into North America, however, came the playable character of Princess Peach.
Not only could players now control her within the game, but Peach could jump further than the other three characters.
She’s smart, she’s pretty and she’s rich!
In 2007, Princess Peach ended up on Forbes’ list of Wealthiest Fictional Billionaires.
At the age of 23, she was worth a huge $1.3 billion – money she had acquired through her inheritance and getting a divorce.
The Koopalings should have been in Super Princess Peach.
Super Princess Peach was a game for Nintendo DS which was released worldwide in 2006.
Creators and designers had intended for the Koopalings (seven siblings) to be included in this game, but for unknown reasons, they were removed.
The final game, however, did include sprites for each of the seven characters.
Princess Peach was loosely based on Popeye’s girlfriend Olive Oyl.
Nintendo originally wanted to make a Popeye-style arcade game in the 1980s, but due to copyright, this wasn’t possible.
However, the creators didn’t want to drop the idea altogether, and so they modelled Mario on Popeye and the female character (Peach’s forerunner) on Olive Oyl.
Nobody called her Princess Peach outside Japan until 1994.
Prior to 1994, she was only known as Princess Peach within Japan.
Everybody outside this country referred to her simply as “Princess Toadstool”.
Although the name “Peach” had started to creep into regular Mario language, it was only really in 1996 that the name became more widely used.
This was due to the N64 release of Super Mario 64, although Yoshi’s Safari (released in 1993) had also used the name “Princess Peach”.
She’s the most popular of all the females.
Within the Mario games, Princess Peach has appeared more times than any other female characters.
Her appearances in the games total 61, while she has been a playable character for a total of 41 games (as of June 2016).
Peach first appeared in 1985, with the release of Super Mario Bros.
Who is Peach’s real boyfriend?
The anime movie, Peach-Hime Kyushutsu Dai Sakusen!, which means, “The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach”, was released in 1986.
The end of the movie shows Princess Peach marrying Prince Haru, the character to which she has been betrothed.
This left fans of the Super Mario Bros games slightly confused, but Nintendo confirmed that Mario was indeed Peach’s real boyfriend.
Princess Peach was not Mario’s first love!
Before Princess Peach came along, Mario only had eyes for a character named Pauline.
She was featured in the 1981 Donkey Kong arcade game, although many people believe that this was meant to be Princess Peach.
However, this was not possible, since Peach was not created until 1985.
